The autumn equinox is approaching. On Sunday 23rd September in the Northern hemisphere we will start going into a season of darkness. You southern hemisphere-ers will be experiencing the opposite as Spring starts and your days get longer. But for the second and last time this year there will be a balance of energy as the Day and Night are equal lengths.
In ancient times Autumn meant the harvest was ready to be collected, which meant abundance. Unfortunately we sort of lost this feeling when food stock became fruitful all year round. Now we sort of freak out over the encroaching darkness. But really there shouldn’t be any fear as life includes many cycles of Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring and therefore growth, harvest, death, rebirth.
For example in women, our menstrual cycle can be seen in the same way. For some the 28 cycle of full moon to new moon have the same spiritual ideas. By honouring cyclical nature we can really hone into feeling our best. No more feeling bad for naturally slowing down for part of the year, this is how it is meant to be.

Now Autumn,
Autumn is time to start going inwards, looking at your abundance of what you’ve grown in the summer time of your life. Like how a squirrel starts collecting nuts for the winter we should start conserving our energy so we’re ready to become dormant in winter. There’s a reason ancient people started storing their autumn crop so it would last the winter. And the physical and spiritual always has some kind of connection.
So now I hope you have some sort of idea of what the Autumn Equinox is about and I know setting intentions has become pretty popular these days but now really is a great time to set some. Lucky for you i’ve come up with some questions you can ask yourself or use as prompts. I recommend getting yourself a piece of paper or a journal to write these down.
-
- Look into what you’ve done this year (look at your harvest) and write down how you have grown this far in 2018?
Look at aspects such as of your love life, career, health and new year aspirations.
- Like the leaves will fall, think about what parts of your life you can start to shed for the new season?
Who do you need to remove from your life, who doesn’t treat you as you deserve or more simply do you have any old clothes you can give to charity? This is also a great time to tidy your room and maybe even get them cozy jumpers and dressing gowns out in preparation.
- Look into what you’ve done this year (look at your harvest) and write down how you have grown this far in 2018?
-
- What seeds do you want to start incubating ready for next spring?
What darkness within yourself have you been naturally avoiding in the lighter months. Don’t forget to nurture these feelings with gentle loving kindness. By looking inwards how do you want to be there for others when the lighter months come around again. We’re all about that self care in this new season.
- What seeds do you want to start incubating ready for next spring?
If you’ve got this far into my blog I want to let you know I’m very grateful and have some other reminders of what this equinox brings. I like to remember that with colder months it’s all about staying cozy and nothing beats grounding foods such as stews, broths and soups. Pack them full of root vegetables (also think halloween and pumpkins) and warming spices such as ginger, turmeric, garlic and cinnamon. And apart from that whip out your humungous scarfs, socks and jumpers and sit by that fire. It’s going to be an abundant Autumn.
